Glenn,

The quality of those videos were outstanding. That was great of you to take the time to help everyone out. I learned something because I've never played Cripple Creek the way you did! Thanks - Doug

Nice site and learning resource!

Since reading the above posts I have joined Glenn's Banjo Academy and gotten each of his Practice CD's. Great stuff! Glenn has a practice CD for each of a a number of songs: Cripple Creek, Cumberland Gap, Hot Corn Cold Corn, Blue Ridge Cabin Home, Blackberry Blossom & others. On each CD he plays the lead and switches to vamping (chucking) then back to lead, etc. several times. Each CD has 10 to 12 tracks per song at increasing speeds from 40 Beats per Minute to 120 or more BPM. I have found these Practice CD's to be great for:

1. Ear training
2. Learning a song @ a very slow speed
3. Learning and practicing chord progressions on songs I already know
4. Cleaning up songs I already know
5. Jam practice (although it does not beat going to jams!)
6. Transition from playing lead to vamping (and back to playing lead)
7. Picking up speed on the songs - I can vamp now pretty good at Glenn's higher speeds for the most part, but I have a ways to go to playing lead at the higher speeds
8. It is an excellent tool for practicing (at various speeds) chords up and down the neck, i.e.) you can grab 6 different G chords, 6 different C chords and 5 different D chords [well, maybe I don't count too well]
9. Lots of fun (this should have been # 1)

An additional use that I have developed for these practice CD's: I have started using them for my "Stand Up & Play the Banjo" practice time. Standing up and playing the jo is a toughie for me! I have made some pretty good progress with this assignment I have given myself and the Practice CD's are my reminder to work this area.

Glenn, thanks for the Banjo Academy site and the Practice CD's. I know it is a long process for you to create each Practice CD but I am looking forward to "I'll Fly Away" and other Practice CD's you create.

Phil
