The intonation is set by sliding the bridge forward or backward on the banjo head. Why do we need to do this. If the bridge is in the correct place the all the notes on the banjo will be in tune. If the bridge is not in the correct place then the notes will get out of tune as you fret up the neck.
We use a tuner to set the bridge in the correct place.
1. Tune the banjo
2. Fret the banjo at the 12 fret then check the tuning. if the note is out of pitch then the bridge needs to be moved.
3. If the note on the 12th fret is flat, then slide the bridge toward the neck about 1/16 of an inch. repeat steps one and 2 until both notes are in tune.
4. If the note on the 12th fret is sharp, slide the bridge toward the Tail piece about 1/16 of an inch. repeat steps one and 2 until both notes are in tune.
5. Once the bridge is in the correct place then take a pencil and mark the back side of the bridge. This will let you know if the bridge has moved.
