A chord is a combination of notes played at the same time.  Just as chords are made up of more than one note, songs are made by combining various chords into various repeating patterns.  The three most important chords for the beginning banjo player are:  G,  C,  and  D.   Here’s the way they are fingered on the banjo neck.

The banjo is tuned to play a G chord, so it can be played without special finger positions.

The  G, C, D, G Pinch Pattern is a practice exercise that combines chords and picking.
